Redefining workforce performance: A conversation with Kobus Visagie of IDS Africa

13 March 2025 364

With a career spanning decades across agriculture, social investment, and leadership development, Kobus shares his unique perspective on what truly drives workforce performance, and why traditional training often misses the mark.

From the Karoo to corporate impact
Growing up in the small town of Fraserburg in the Karoo, Kobus’s passion for agriculture and its people was cultivated early on. After studying agriculture and beginning his career in teaching, he transitioned into skills training for farm workers. Over time, his journey took him to the Development Bank of Southern Africa, then to Genkor's social investment programs, and eventually to the Waitrose Foundation. There, he helped pioneer a groundbreaking model where international retailers reinvested in the quality of life for farm workers producing their goods.

Today, Kobus channels this wealth of experience into IDS Africa, a consultancy-turned-impact-driven organisation focused on transforming workplace performance across the continent.

Leadership lessons that transcend industries
Throughout his career, Kobus learned that effective leadership is not about doing the work yourself but empowering others to excel. This shift, from being an output-driven individual contributor to a people-focused leader, was a pivotal moment in his career. He emphasises that leadership is less about holding all the answers and more about guiding teams to unlock their own potential.

Another hard-earned lesson? A leader's truth is shaped by their personal experiences, values, and failures, and it's rarely the only truth in the room. This humility, he explains, is essential for authentic leadership and meaningful change.

IDS Africa’s fresh approach to workforce development

IDS Africa doesn’t just deliver training, it creates environments where people are motivated to change themselves. Kobus believes that while technical skills are important, they’re only part of the equation. Sustainable transformation comes from emotional buy-in, personal accountability, and a shift in mindset.

“We can give people all the tools in the world,” Kobus says, “but it’s only when they decide to use them to be the best version of themselves that real change happens.” IDS Africa’s programs focus on wellness, motivation, and experiential learning, tailoring each initiative to the unique needs of businesses and their employees.

Measuring success beyond the checklist
Unlike many traditional training providers that measure success through attendance or compliance, IDS Africa evaluates the ripple effect of its interventions. Six months post-training, Kobus and his team gather feedback directly from employees, asking: Has your day-to-day experience improved? Has leadership changed for the better? This people-first metric ensures that workforce performance isn't just a statistic, it’s a lived reality.

Looking ahead: Mentorship, strategy, and scale
The future of IDS Africa lies in deeper partnerships with businesses, particularly in agriculture, where human capital remains the greatest asset, and cost. With growing requests for one-on-one mentoring and leadership coaching, Kobus sees an opportunity to build stronger managers who can, in turn, build stronger teams.

In a rapidly changing world dominated by technology and AI, he believes the human element will remain central to workplace success. Values, ethics, and emotional intelligence are skills no machine can replicate, and they’re at the heart of IDS Africa’s mission.

Final thoughs
This conversation with Kobus Visagie is a powerful reminder that real transformation in organizations doesn’t come from ticking training boxes—it comes from fostering growth, self-awareness, and purpose in every individual. As Kobus and IDS Africa continue their work, they’re not just building better businesses—they’re building better lives.
